What to do if you hate your job.

We've all been there, either a crappy boss, mundane work that we are tired of doing, or you're just unhappy with the atmosphere, so many scenarios on why we dislike doing the 9 to 5... so what to do if you hate your job.

So a couple of things on this because it's not an easy topic or a quick fix. But I will try and make it as easy and straight forward as I can.

There are several different types of employment but most employers employ based on something called "At will Employment." This means you can leave an employer at anytime and the employer can tell you, "You're services are no longer needed" also at any time.

So with this posting first, identify why you hate your job. Once you do that then you can take a few different approaches with how to either deal with the challenges OR you don't deal with it.

If it's your manager, well there's a few things on this one. See if you can identify why you're not getting along or are you just being managed? Are you making errors that they are catching? Are you coming in late and they catch it? Well, that's managing and that's what a manager is supposed to do. BUT if a manager is calling you names, acting inappropriate for the work place then you should be reporting them to Human Resources or their manager. That's a whole different situation.

Back to "At will employment" You are, by your own free will, going to a place of work for money. If you are not happy with your job, change it. This sounds easier said than done. But it's true. There is no one out there that is going to make you happy but you. No one is making you get up to go to that job you hate. You have bills, rent, mortgage, groceries, vet bills, car insurance, medical insurance... GUESS WHAT? WE ALL DO. SO JUST CHANGE IT. If you are already a disengaged employee, more than likely other employees around you are aware of it. That in turn will impact your personal branding.

You do not need to be miserable. When you interview for a new role, you know what you want your new boss to be like and the kind of organization that you want to work for. Get your resume out there, talk to a recruiter or employment agency.

It breaks my heart to hear about people that are in a job they are absolutely miserable in. I've had plenty of conversations with clients and they get a look of relief when I say, you need to make a decision for yourself. This is not a selfish one you deserve to be happy. And I don't deny it, it's scary. But are you going to live the one life you have hating something? And you are subjecting yourself to it? No, thank you.

Just do the change, once you make the decision to do, holy cow, the sense of relief and creating the exit strategy actually gets people excited. Check out my other blog on goal setting and "Goals, Map That Sh*t Out."

You can also reach out and ask me any questions regarding exit strategies from an employer. It's all about that pursuit of happiness people!
